April 22, 2022 - ABV: 12.5%. This bottle was opened for lunch and it had an extremely herbaceous nose with heavy notes of anise. With a quick decant, the herbs slowly subsided to reveal sour cherries and cranberries. However, I revisited the wine (left in the decanter) during dinner and it was surprisingly delicious. Now the nose exhibited an umami-like profile, surrounded by dark cherries and plums. The acid is fully integrated and the wine drank beautifully. I don't think this wine will be able to cellar much longer so if you have a bottle, decant it for a few hours and then enjoy.

August 30, 2011 - Popped and poured. Continue to be pleasantly surprised by these older BV Rutherrfords. Not the most profound drink, but still some red stewed fruit. Great drink for late evening dinner while watching the game.

December 24, 2010 - Pretty much dead, probably good about 10 years ago, now shouling acidity, pale colour and no fruit. Pity!

October 3, 2007 - Earthy nose, dominate flavors are cedar and tobacco but a mellow fruit with hints of sour cherry and currants underneath. Interesting but not great wine.

May 22, 2006 - Just retired and decided to get organized. Joined CT to tackle my mainly LIFO managed small 20 year collection. Discovered in the back of the basement these '83 cabs. After reading the highly mixed reviews, decided I would try one and dump them if necessary. First sip on opening resulted in a questionable opinion, not good but worth a decanter and long airing. Four hours later tasted again and discovered a generic fruit aroma, mild tannins and very low acidity (both pluses for me). No oak, cedar or vanilla. Not bad, and glad we enjoyed with pasta. Glad I gave this 20 year old vet a chance. I'll drink the other one too.

The main reason I bother with this review is that i wonder how much the wide range of opinions on a given wine depend on how it is cellared. This Ordinary oldtimer spent its days at a constant 57-60 degrees. comments?
