February 3, 2016 - Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira): Interesting golden color for a Malvasia (this golden color is a theme with Barbeito, it seems). I get cigar smoke, baked apple and wood varnish on the nose. Tastes like sweet candied tropical fruits but it’s refreshing. I also get cognac-like elements and some polished wood. Lovely freshness for a Malvasia.

December 13, 2015 - Madeira and Champagne (Chicago, IL): Lot 1. Bottle 517/1416. Bottled February 2015. Initial impression: stunning madeira. This is so refined and smooth, with elegance and poise. The nose is quite reticent, but shows a very lovely brown sugar note. The palate's acidity is in perfect harmony with all the other elements. There's sweet candied citrus peel, as well as tart citrus notes. And it's all bound together with some ancient tinta negra that provides a lovely roundness to it all.
