Community Tasting Notes 2

November 27, 2017 - This was a case of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde - the first day it was Hyde (the bad one), the second day it was Jeckyl (the good one). I don't know what this bodes for the future, but it suggests to (a) wait 6-12 months to drink or, failing that, (b) decant - a lot.

On the first day, it was buttery, extracted, and chunky. Light yellow in color, full in body, nose of orange peel, almond syrup, and chalk. Tastes of golden delicious apple, lemon meringue pie, grapefruit, and hazelnut, with a sour and intense finish. 14.7% alcohol. It reminded me of an ultra-rich Napa Chardonnay (e.g., Bevan, Darioush, Lewis) - an observation I don't mean as a compliment. This was raw and blowsy, even after several hours of air. As a result, I initially rated this wine an 88.

On the second day, the wine had mellowed into something more lively and integrated. The nose now had a hint of saline, and the oak-driven smell was more subtle - more vanilla bean than almond syrup. The wine tasted more like green apple and lemon peel, as opposed to the riper and fatter tastes described above. In short, it was quite good - ripe, but more restrained than the first night - a very nice wine, especially at under $50.
