May 20, 2024 - 20x Burgundy 2014 - 10 years on: We tasted 16 reds (all blind) and 4 whites (non-blind). Some observations: 1) True to the vintage, most wines showed fresh, with medium+ complexity, a bright fruit profile but still a bit of rusticity here and there. 2) The tannins will have to melt further, and age should bring a bit more complexity. But my guess is, only the top wines will have enough stuffing to age gracefully for an extended period of time. 3) It’s not a highest-quality vintage and hence true gems are confined to the Grand Cru tier, with lesser crus offering little excitement. 4) The wines were surprisingly open and ready, although the best wines all got time in the decanter.

TN: The nose is subdued, somewhat muddled. On the palate, it's more lively; edgy, crunchy textures with dark red and hints of blue fruit, accompanied by some cola notes. It achieves a medium complexity and good precision, yet it lacks harmony and balance. It's missing the finesse and roundness one might hope for, feeling quite ripe. The nose doesn't impress, and though it fares better on the palate, the overall it falls short. Some suggested it might be an off bottle.

Decanting: Maybe two hours in a decanter would have helped.

May 10, 2024 - 2014 Burgundy 10years on, tasted blind: Muted nose, red and dark fruits, also some unclean aromas. Compressed palate, tight and rustic. I think this is an off-bottle, hence no rating. Group Rank: 13/16

    May 7, 2024 - Dark cerise.
Utterly unique nose of heady floral scents, nectar and honey, roses and smoke.
The palate started with dark red fruits, sloes and damsons mingled with dank forest floor, but with air interestingly boysenberries and complex charcuterie, particularly sopressa but also jamon, pepper, became prominent in what is a weightless, mineral-acid wine, barely discernible tannin, enjoyed over 8 hours it evolved minimally.
This was a very interesting experience but again, like most Barthod I’ve tasted, more in the realm of academic than hedonistic pleasure.

June 9, 2022 - Bodegas Tradicion et al. (Chicago, IL): Served double blind, from a bottle that had been opened the night before. A bit of a volcanic mineral thing on the nose, with pleasant red fruit, and a dusty quality to the tannins. Clearly with a little bit of age. I guessed a riper Etna nerello mascalese. Oof.

October 28, 2021 - Very tight, very floral. Carved from stone with a hint of cherry. Dense and chiseled, build for the long haul, plenty of chalky extract. Great balance and too young.
