Community Tasting Notes 11

January 12, 2021 - Sediment noted in neck of bottle, + I noticed the TINIEST amount of extremely fine sediment in the bottom of the final glass; VERY brief mousse.

N: Plums with notes of pyrazines & hints of yeastiness?

P: Med body; Rndish entry with nice, ALMOST swtish frt met by a BRIEFLY brisk acidity which fairly seamlessly morphs into a LONG, BITTER/swt (75:25) finish. In short, NICE for the 1st several seconds, then QUICKLY becoming problematic with its bitterness. I won't score this atypical sparkling wine varietal (Shiraz) & ABV (13.5% declared) as it was obtained > 5 yrs ago & almost assuredly poorly stored for much if not most of that.

October 26, 2018 - Circa 2008-2013. Bottle immediately bubbled over despite a careful opening. Colour is a very dark purple, almost black. Nothing on the nose but a distant hint of red liquorice. Palate shows strong fruit flavours of blackcurrant and plum, with background notes of oak and leather. Acidity and alcohol stick out: not overpowering, but not well-integrated. Sweet and slightly sugary on the finish despite rough acidity and effervescence. This is a wine for chugging, not sipping. To be fair, this was a 5-to-10-year-old bottle that was probably intended for immediate consumption.

March 21, 2015 - WSET Level 4 Course - WSET School; 9/6/2014-5/23/2015 (WSET School, Bermondsey): Appearance: The wine is Clear with a Deep ruby colour.
Nose: The nose is Clean and Youthful, showing Medium(+) intensity primary aromas of red cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, black plum.
Palate: The wine is Medium Dry in the mouth with a Medium(-) level of acidity. It has Medium(-) Ripe/Soft tannins and a Medium Level of alcohol (13.00%). It has Full body and Medium(+) intensity primary flavours of red cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, black plum. The finish is Medium. It has a creamy mousse. Ripe, cooked/baked fruit character
Overall: Lacks complexity beyond the primary fruit character. Reasonable concentration of flavours and reasonable length. It is a simple wine.
Conclusion: It is a Good quality wine. Drink Now; not suitable for Ageing or Further Ageing The attraction is in the fruit character. This will fade with ageing. The wine will not improve with ageing.; Medium priced (£9.99)

October 20, 2014 - The wine is clear and bright with a deep ruby colour and presence of medium-sized bubbles. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium(+) intensity aromas of very ripe blackberries, plums jam, liquorice, black pepper and chocolate. The wine is medium-dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has medium fine-grained tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium(+) body and medium(+) intensity flavours of very ripe blackberries, plums jam, liquorice, black pepper and chocolate. The finish is medium.

It is a good quality wine. It has a very nice flavour concentration and the tannins are well-balanced by the sweetness. However it lacks some acidity to reach a better balance, and the finish could be longer. Can drink now, but has some tannic structure and enough fruit concentration to develop a bit more of complexity in the next 1-2 years.
