March 8, 2024 - While the core color has been and remains to be cranberry, age is creeping in with maroon being the color of the rim. The cranberry theme carries over to the bouquet and through the palate where the fruit is almost crunchy. Notes of cinnamon, saddle leather and a bit of sandalwood waft from the glass, and with every sip, glide across the palate. The tannins are fully resolved and the finish has sufficient length, but the fruit is fading and the wine is not as focused. But it still delivers pleasure. A few years back, I mused on the possibility of setting aside some bottles for 10 years. That was misguided and I’m glade not to have followed my own advice. Time to drink up. Some sediment, but not a lot. Decanted. 13% alc. With mushroom pot pie (or tart). 03.08.24. Recommended.

November 11, 2020 - It's been more than 5 years since my last bottle of this and it has settled nicely into maturity with the sort of gentle bottle sweetness that only comes from time in the cellar. Cool herbal notes with damp forest scents and wafting dried cherry. Fully resolved and shaped more by the underlying acidity than detectable residual tannin. A lovely old dame that will quietly fade away. Drink up.

January 11, 2020 - A deep cranberry fills the glass. Yet, while the wine presents young to the eye, the nose and palate were a touch on the tired side. Les Grezeaux often has a rustic element - that’s part of its charm - but rarely have I had one that was tired or dull. Yes, the wine had the usual cranberry, raspberry and leather as well as a goodly dose of cinnamon, but the flavors were neither distinct nor etched, but rather more akin to shadows cast on the wall. Three years ago, I recommended putting this aside for another 10 years. Now I’m not so sure. Perhaps a slow-ox opening would be best for the next data point. Some slight sediment. 12.5% alc. With grilled, bone-in pork chops topped with Stilton, bourbon cranberries and wild rice. Recommended, with a nod toward “with Reservations”.

October 21, 2017 - Deep cranberry colors the glass. The youth of this Chinon is not in doubt. The rustic nose foretells of tannins not yet integrated, but it also speaks of cranberry, raspberry and leather, but is silent as to any sandalwood. The fruit and leather notes shout through on the attack, but there is nothing subtle about this wine .... yet. The palate is still a bit taut and rustic; the tannins not integrated, but on their way. The finish is spicy, but not yet “sandalwood.” Pull this again in 8 to 10 years. The neck of the wine was muddy with precipitants, but no sediment at all. 12.5% alc. With bleu de Basque and other cheeses, molé and Nosturo salumi. Recommended.

August 30, 2016 - Evidence of secondary fermentation: cloudy with a tad of spritz; raspberry flavors tainted with stewed cabbage.
