March 21, 2019 - Purchased from Domaine 22 years ago. Light ruby colour with cowboy saddle and cherry nose followed by a tertiary palate of old Swedish barn timbers. Long..no… ridiculously long finish that clearly indicates why all roads lead to Burgundy. Shazaam!

June 30, 2018 - Musique & Vin Festival BYO Dinner with Musicians (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): This had been opened an hour earlier, and we were told it seemed tired and probably dead. So this was decanted to revisit that hour later, at which point it had engaging earth, mushroom and mature red cherry aromas, with similar flavors, just perhaps not fully pristine, but perfectly enjoyable.

  • William Kelley Likes this wine: 100 points

October 22, 2016 - From a Burgundian cellar, and bearing the name of Pierre Engel, René's son and Philippe's father, this wine had been bottled by its purchaser rather than at the domaine. Whoever conducted the mise clearly did a magnificent job, and also selected a splendid barrel, as this was an utterly brilliant bottle of mature red Burgundy that it would be fatuous to score any less generously. A spectacularly kaleidoscopic bouquet of ripe black fruits, licorice, rose, incense and squab evolve in the glass, seguing into griotte cherry over the course of the evening, with notes of nutmeg and other warm spices beginning to emerge by the last glass. On the palate the wine is rich, concentrated, and incredibly intense and satisfying, framed by a beautiful chassis of melted tannins.

October 4, 2009 - It started nicely, pure pinot, red jammy fruit. The 60’s version of cal pinot, very modern? Not too complex nose. As Kelly said, it suffered next to the La Tache.
