Community Tasting Notes 1

    August 16, 2019 - 10,7% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Very pale and youthful, almost colorless whitish-green appearance. Ripe yet very crisp and sharp nose with aromas of juicy Granny Smith apple, some yeasty tones, a little bit of key lime, light reductive notes of rubber, a hint of something slightly nutty and a touch of flint smoke. The wine is lean, tightly-wound and somewhat austere on the palate with bone-dry flavors of lemony citrus fruits and key lime, some green apple bitterness, a little bit of smoky reduction, light pithy notes of pomelo, mineral hints of steely and tangy salinity and a touch of pink grapefruit. The bracing acidity makes the wine feel very structured and incisive, but the fruit offers very little counterpoint to the sharp acidity. The finish is long, clean and lively with bracing acidity and intense flavors of lemony citrus fruits and pomelo, some tangy salinity, light Granny Smith apple tones, a hint of steely minerality and a touch of gunpowder smoke.

A clean, crisp and very youthful Riesling that is still so very painfully young. True to the classic Aussie Riesling style, this isn't a fruity and flabby Riesling, but instead a very linear, racy and acid-driven effort with so sharp, austere fruit that it feels borderline underripe. These wines can be quite off-putting in their youth, but they age like crazy if you just have the wits to stash them in your cellar. This wine is all about potential and complete zero immediate enjoyment - even for an acid-head like me this wine was just too lean and austere for pleasure. Although the wine might not sound too inviting at the moment, this is truly a wine you need to start collecting. Expect the score to rise noticeably with age - that is, in perhaps 15-20 years.
