Community Tasting Notes 5

March 17, 2022 - Gamay and Famille Paquet (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Thought it was old Loire chenin, but there are some really off-putting cheese notes on the nose here. Wooly, too. Not my kind of wine at all.

November 30, 2017 - Darkened gold. Some acidity but a touch of maderization at finish. Good structure, but not that expressive. Some salinity...blind tasting group stumped and went for White Rioja. Less interesting than a 2001 I opened same day for lunch: 2001 had the oiliness you sometimes find from the extended time the wine spent on the lees.

February 12, 2017 - Not as complex and spiritual experience as the 98. Honeyed smell and taste backed up with strong acidity band salinity. Fun pairing with oyster gratin : the béchamel matching the honeyed and smooth character, the oyster bringing back the salinity and stating : ' I am a Muscadet!'

February 11, 2017 - Post-auction fun (Birch Road Cellar, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose shows the age of the wine with some crisco, honey, and lemon curd notes as well as red apples, biscuits, and some mineral tones.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity still provides a spine with the feel showing some density with crisco, pears, honey notes, minerals, and red apples.

Overall: This is still there, but it's starting to turn more into a thought exercise. Still, it's fun to get a chance to try something like this to get an idea of how Muscadet ages.

February 8, 2017 - Surprisingly fresh and vital, light gold in color, very little oxidation other than a honeyed note on the finish. Good acidity still, and very good with mussels as you'd expect. One of the greatest values in ageable white wine.
