August 8, 2023 - Opaque black cherry color to the rim, with a boisterously aromatic nose, presenting with aromas of concentrated black and blue fruit, and a sweet bouquet of the four varietals (Merlot-36%, Cabernet Sauvignon-32%, Cabernet Franc -28%, and Malbec-4%), wrapped in a subtle thin veil of dusty smoked wine barrels.
This 14.1% ABV blend, sans food, has a lighter than expected mouthfeel, in spite of its apparently well extracted visual appearance had initially implied, invoking a Saint-Julien identity per the winemakers’ oenophilic finesse from grapes grown in the central southern Columbia Valley, Washington etiology.
The very pleasing fruit flavors are more brilliant than opulent, and form an hour glass shape, thinning out in mid palate and modestly reappearing on the long and gossamer finish.
This wine is reminiscent (although expertly vinified, being more modest and less concentrated), of sophisticated Alexander Valley, California red blends.
This wine is a definite bargain and, although it has the endearing tannic quality of a dry, dusty Chianti Classico Reserve, it possesses a beautiful fruit profile. -

May 17, 2019 - Decanted ≈75 min into a plastic, cylindrical pitcher which was then closed; Private Preserve after Day 1
Per the label, 36% Merlot, 32% C.S., 28% C.F., & 4% Malbec
N: Slightly closed; Choc SLIGHTLY atop ripe berries, poss notes of pyrazines? Intensity lurking?
P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, almost swtish frt met by astringent pucker which only somewhat works its way out by the LONG, SPICY finish with a tangy/bitterness to the dusty tannins. // Day 3: For many palates (I suspect), a MUCH more attractive wine today! IF you've any more of this, consider giving it WAY > air than I did, or cellaring it through '21 min?
∑: 14.1% ABV; My VG+ right NOW, though with potential for 1-2 notches higher... eventually. [As of late May '19, wine-searcher still shows 2 *DRASTICALLY* skewed sources: $33 & $88!]

David O’Reilly and his team show great range through a number of styles. From the Corvidae lineup to Owen Roe’s namesake label, Oregon Pinot Noir to Yakima Cabernet, these wines have continued to surprise and delight us over the years. (The 2016 Corvidae Lenore was one of the better uses for a $10 bill in 2018.) For those list members new to Owen Roe—consider today’s lineup a worthy representation of the many excellent wines this team makes.The makeup of Owen Roe’s Yakima Red is dependent on the vintage—it’s always a blend of the varietals the team at Owen Roe feels best represent that year, chosen from some of their favorite vineyards in Washington state. In 2015, it was 36% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cab Franc, and 4% Malbec. It leads with black cherry laced with dried herbs, and slowly layers in tobacco complexities and dark chocolate. The mouth is dense with lavish fruit, brightened by orange blossoms and kept serious by resounding acidity and tannins to match. It has a lengthy finish to match its palate-staining nature.
