Community Tasting Notes 9

April 4, 2020 - Purchased direct from the winery. I can't decide whether I'm getting more of a beef bourguignon or stroganoff thing going in the nose of this wine; probably more the latter with notes of cooked fungi and such. Suffice to say, this wine is tossing off extremely tertiary scents that are somewhat perplexing. The palate of the wine offers a lovely balance of semi-fresh strawberry and red fruits with decent acidity and a pinot-like gracefulness that blends into a lengthy, sweet finish of minerals and spice. There's not one iota of any sense of heat or alcohol in this wine. The fruit is surprisingly present while this definitely drinks like a two-decade old wine. It's unlikely this will improve with more aging and it may be just past peek, but the complexity and grace of this wine is supreme. You'd be hard-pressed to find many wines like it. I think it's quite unique.

December 5, 2018 - Still drinking beautifully 18 years in. Big nose of leather and dark fruit with spicy notes. The palate is rich with juicy fruit, menthol, blackberry notes with a hit of acidity. Delicious tannin on the finish.

March 25, 2018 - Decanted. An unusual blend: Cab, Syrah, and Merlot. In its very final days, I would guess, but quite lovely: plummy and mushroomy, with many tertiary notes and still interesting tannins. Drink now.

February 22, 2018 - Another top bottle of this great Renaissance blend. Leather and meat on the nose. This is Big all around. Palate is dark fruit, menthol, blackberries. Good bit of acidity that cuts the huge mellow fruit. Definite tannins still there after all these years. Finish just keeps on coming.

March 25, 2016 - Big wine. Nose of dried herbs, black fruit. In the mouth there is a lot going on: notes of animal, cola, mint merging with black fruit. Very nice effort, with still a lot of grip, allowing it to be cellared for the foreseeable future.
