April 29, 2024 - The maker is a real gentleman and very committed to expressing the special qualities of various parcels of Shiraz fruit in the Barossa Valley. There is going to be a question of style here in terms of how you enjoy the wine but objectively it is really impossible not to see this wine as being 'Outstanding'.
I think what impresses me most is that the wine is quintessential Moppa from the heart of darkness on the Barossa valley floor, from a powerful vintage and yet there is surprising lightness to this wine. It is the opposite in mouthfeel and presence to the usual Barossa. That means that even those who struggle with the Barossa style (as I sometimes do), will probably find themselves pleasantly surprised that this does not run over their palate like a schwere panzer-abteilung at Prokhorovka in July 1943.
Of course, there is the hit of ripe blackberry and dark plum fruit, followed by liquorice and coffee grounds and some black pepper (and on day 1 some nice leaf for complexity) but the fruit never seems baked or dead and the tannins are supportive with just enough acid to keep things fresh. More the balance and power of the Panther tank than the hulking and slightly ridiculous Tiger tank but perhaps the T34-85 was better than both of those.
Under screw cap this has years ahead of it but right now it is in a very happy place and I always think that is when one drinks wine.2 people found this helpful Comment -

May 7, 2018 - NobleRottersSydney - with Moncur Cellars (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {screwcap, 14.5%, A$60} The 2016 Moppa shiraz is inky, smelling of blackcurrant, and very tight. The palate is plummy and perfumed, medium-bodied, with gentle low-ish dusty tannins, a medium-length finish, and low-key acidity. Not quite a fruit-bomb, but getting close. Far too young to drink really, yet structurally soft enough that you can if you really want.
