August 29, 2020 - 90 is "Very Good", which this is. Our prior bottles were consumed too young, this is at a very good stage at almost 7 years old (assume harvest in Argentina would be Feb-March 2021 as opposed to September here).
The fruit is the star and it is neither overbearing nor timid. Lots of red raspberry and cherry with touches of oak and earth. Just a click or two short of robust, with enough elegance to make you really appreciate what the Argentinians have done with Malbec, previously (and still) a Bordeaux blending grape. This was 100% Malbec. Any Tikal product has a great Quality to Price Ratio (QPR), but they need a few years to develop to their potential.

March 17, 2020 - We've had a lot of Tikal over the years and their wine (of various varieties) has been among our favorites, but we knew their stuff needed aging, so we gave it 6 years which usually worked.
This was just short of disappointing, but still can rate a 87. A lot of the depth and character we have seen in prior vintages with Tikal was lacking.
It tasted like a $15 Malbec.
Maybe an off vintage? Certainly not a flawed wine and we gave it several hours of air and it was the same the second night.
Sadly, makes me think I need to look elsewhere for Agentinian Malbec in this price range.

January 19, 2019 - South American Reds (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Apparently 85% Malbec & 15% C.F., aged in oak barrels for 14 mos

N: CREAMY, SMOKY oak, poss with notes of coffee

P: LM, poss Med, body; NICE, almost swtish, coffee-tinged frt met by some astringent pucker which loses the majority of its snap as it morphs into a LONG finish with a tangy/swtness to the dusty tannins. Deserves/NEEDS through '19, then drinking for 3 yrs more. My EXC-. 92 pts ea Vinous (Tanzer) & WE @ $33, and 90+ WA. [This vendor's $25.95 puts it in the top 20% of wine-searcher's entries.]
