April 6, 2020 - 2015 Sacred Hill Brokenstone was ripe and youthful. The Merlot-dominant blend was clear and medium ruby in colour without any sediments. Aromas of blackcurrant, ripe dark plum and prune were up front, followed by violets, vanilla and cream. The nose was quite grapey and flashy at this early stage of development. On the palate, it was dry and full-bodied, with medium-high levels of acidity and gripping tannin. Intense flavours of dark plum jam, liqourice, spices, toast and coffee were present in a long finish. Despite the ripe fruit profile, the alcohol level was at a civilised level of 13.5%. The blend consisted of 87% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 4% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged in 22% new French oak barrels for 19 months. The name, Brokenstone, was a nod to the stony topsoil of Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay.

Next to 2007 Pichon Lalande, 2015 Brokenstone seemed a bit gloss and lacked refinement. It would surely benefit from a few years of bottle ageing for the primary fruit flavours to tame down and for tertiary flavours to develop. Within the region of Gimblett Gravels, Bordeaux-inspired blends from Craggy Range and Vidal Estate seemed to be more polished and stylish.
