January 21, 2024 - Way too young - against my better judgment and with multiple older nebbs available I nonetheless checked in on this one. Beautiful clear crimson at pour into decanter. Restrained nose - clean - rock dust red raspcherry. Tartness and astringent tannins dominate first taste. By the end of the night in the decanter this wine did not budge.
Next AM for breakfast as coffee was brewing the last 1.5 glasses in the decanter showed a different face with the nice fruit on the nose being able to stay and play a little while as the fierce tannins which were so astringently granular began to lean toward its eventual velvet. If I were to mistakenly uncork another in the near or medium term I would decant for double digit hours. Best just to lie dormant in a cool cellar for another decade.

    December 23, 2022 - Day 1 A flatliner with a grainy and dusty mouthfeel.
Day 3 More tannins and accidity detected with a little red fruit on the horizon. Very disappointing Vietti. But the label will sell it.

July 22, 2020 - The 2014 Vietti Ravera is a wine that's hard to understand today, and it did not show nearly as well as the '14 Rocche did when I tasted it a few weeks ago. On the nose, I found sweet dark red cherries, fresh herbs, licorice, and a hint of citrus. On the palate, the wine showed primarily dark red cherry fruit and some licorice at the back end. It was relatively austere and medium in body with noticeable tannin at the back end. Acidity level is high. There is a bit of a lack of depth on the palate in general, both in the mid palate and finish, which causes the tannins to stick out.

In short, while I usually love the Vietti wines and I found the '14 Rocche to be stunning, at least at this stage the '14 Ravera came across as a fairly middling wine to me. Hopefully the issue is simply a wine that requires time to become more expressive.

Day 2 Update: Personally I rarely find wines better on day 2, but in this case the Vietti Ravera is showing a bit better today, and I'm upgrading my score from 92 to 93. On the nose, the wine is showing a similar dark red fruit expression but it is a bit more expressive and complex than yesterday. On the palate it remains austere, but the sweetness of the fruit emerged today and that combined with the high acidity level make a striking combo even if there isn't a ton of flavor complexity revealing itself yet. In terms of texture, it remains a medium bodied Barolo with less depth and length than I'd hope for.

Based on the day two showing a bit better, I'm cautiously optimistic. But I wouldn't recommend anyone open a bottle of this soon, whereas the '14 Rocche was already a thrill to drink.
