March 5, 2022 - Earthy flavors and grilled meats lead with blackberry and blueberry supporting...this would never be mistaken for a new world syrah.

February 22, 2021 - Deep ruby red. Bright red berries on the nose with black olives, leather and a hint of tobacco. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and a medium plus body. Layered palate with raspberries, black cherries, animal nuances, truffles, olive tapenade and a little earthiness. Long finish. Drink till 2032.

September 11, 2020 - 2016 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie Les Bécasses was elegant, layered, well-balanced. The developing Côte-Rôtie was clear and medium ruby in colour with fine sediments. It took four hours of in-bottle aeration to open up impressive aromatics of blackberries, dark cherries and violet blossom, followed by farmyard, Oriental spices, blood, raw game and a touch of orange zest. The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, with medium level of balanced acidity and medium-high level of finely grained tannin. Flavours of bramble, beef tartare, Ceylon tea, wet stones, and iron-like minerality persisted in a long floral finish.

This négociant label offered great regional typicity of Côte-Rôtie, with the signature floral and gamey notes. I enjoyed the stylish touch of farmyard and iron-like minerality. Some tasters reported excessive smokiness, jamminess and over-ripeness, which luckily I did not seem to experience in my bottle.

Les Bécasses was made from purchased grapes across the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde sectors, composed of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier. The wine was matured in 80% oak casks and 20% stainless steel tank. About 15% of the oak were new, and the rest were second or third fill barrels. As many as 3,000 cases were produced annually.

October 30, 2019 - Pepper, blackberry, floral and vanilla nose. Good flavours and balance; mid-weight with a rich, glycerined viscosity; complex finish.
