Community Tasting Notes 6

November 6, 2021 - Tremendous. As I tasted the ex voto, I expected that was the best of the night — and yet, this managed to outpace it ever so slightly based on a better integration of the oak. Beautiful flavor profile shows rich white peach, pear, and flowers. Long finish. Perhaps the biggest finding from the whole tasting — I need to drink more Hermitage Blanc — I always enjoy it and yet rarely drink it.

October 23, 2021 - Wine Advocate Kings of Rhone Online Masterclass: More elegant than the Ex Voto. A lighter profile but with all the intensity. Sweet peaches and white flowers. Silky smooth full body. A little smoke on the finish. No noticeable acidity but tastes fresh nonetheless.

October 16, 2021 - Kings of Rhone Masterclass (Casa Esperanza): Wow. I was swept away by this - the best wine out of a good quartet of white Rhones today. Young of course, but really delicious at this stage of its development. It had a lovely nose, with white fruits and white flowers, beeswax and honey, then little bits of spice and a touch of granitic mineral. A really pretty bouquet. As lovely as the nose was though, it was on the palate where this really shone. Wow. Supple, creamy, fleshy, yet so perfectly balanced and controlled, with wonderfully judged flavours of honeyed pears and fresh melons, and then a surprisingly bright burst of blood orange, trailing away into a lovely finish with just a tiny hint of nuttiness underlying drifts of spice and flowers. What a marvellous wine - I could drink this in buckets. While absolutely beautiful at its young phase, I would love to see what it tastes like when it develops though. Drink now, or hold for another 15-20 years.

October 9, 2021 - Kings of Rhône: Kings of Rhône virtual masterclass moderated by WA‘s Joe Czerwinski featuring both Michel Chapoutier and Philippe Guigal who presented 5 wines each. Including shipping and storage, all wines spent approx. 1 week in a screw cap phial. In this direct face-off, Guigal had the upper hand claiming the top 3 wines: La Turque 2017 (98), La Mouline 2016 (97), Ex-Voto Blanc 2017 (96). Chapoutier's top wine was the Le Pavillon 2015 (95). Full list included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Lychee and tangerine fruit, acacia honey. Rich and floral Softly textured and very wholesome overall. Not quite as bombastic as Guigal's Ex-Voto.

October 7, 2021 - Had at the same time as le Meal blanc. This seemed to me to have a little more oak on the nose. White flowers and citrus peel. Shorter at this point vs le Meal but more elegant I would say.
