Community Tasting Notes 5

September 3, 2023 - My second time tasting a Poggio il Castellare BDM, and probably my last. I didn't heed CT advice and try something different. I placed my wine in a decanter, and I began sipping after 30 minutes. It had a funky Pea soup aroma that wore off after several hours. A bit of fruit emerged on day two, but nothing really exciting about this wine. Is it worth $50 a bottle? No Signora!

September 9, 2021 - The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry, cherry, oak and vanilla. It tastes like strawberry, cranberry, cherry, oak and vanilla. The body is medium. The wine finishes short. The wine has medium acidity.

February 14, 2021 - Typical Brunello character, tobacco, cherries, forest floor. Alcohol makes it a little hot. Not a great deal of length for a brunello. O.k., not great.

December 5, 2020 - PnP, which in retrospect an hour or two of air in decanter would be suggested. Typical aromas, a little more freshness than I was expecting on the med/med+ bodied palate. Seems like it will be better in the short/mid-term. Not a wine I'd have in my own cellar as there are simply so many others that have more to say at or near the same price. It's certainly recommended in the context of its style, and for the drinking window referenced above.

January 27, 2020 - Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello NYC.This wine will be available later this spring in the US. While this showed as being quite tight, the bottle had just been opened and this was one of the first few tables I approached. There was a smokiness to the nose. The color was a little more like a medium crimson than garnet. Lots of cherry fruit and licorice on the palate and a rather long finish.I thought this was very good though not a blockbuster. I have been somewhat disappointed with some older vintages of this wine, that evolved rather linearly with a short finish and lacking depth, so I will refrain from handicapping this for the future.
