November 27, 2022 - Deep purple in colour. Bright cherry, licorice, white pepper notes. Full bodied, balanced tannins.

August 27, 2022 - Nice wine, but as in other notes, a very green quality to wine. Nice acidity, med body, beautiful colour, with notes of black fruit and leather, but the green notes on finish were not as enjoyable.

October 3, 2020 - I heard great words about the wines of Painted Rock even before I visited Canada the first time, so I naturally had high expectations. Unfortunately, this bottle did not deliver.

2016 Painted Rock Cabernet Sauvignon was awkwardly herbaceous and spiced. The developing Okanagan Valley Canbernet Sauvignon was clear and medium ruby in colour without any sediments. Freshly uncorked, there were pronounced notes of bay leaves, anise spices and roasted bell pepper, followed by vanilla and ripe blackberry in the background. The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with medium level of acidity and rather high level of chalky tannin. The combination of burning spices and herbaceousness were difficult to comprehend. There were flavours of cassis, smoke and mint in a medium disjointed finish. There was insufficient fruit to balance the spices and herbaceousness, and the 14.6% alcohol was quite aggressive on the standards of Cabernet Sauvignon.

From the information on the back label, the grapes were from a tiny 2.15-acre block in the estate vineyard, and the wine was aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak.

I generally appreciate a touch of methoxypyrazines, as a fan of Loire and Niagara Cabernet Franc. However, the combination of spices, alcoholic sensation and herbaceousness did not work for me. I hope that other wines of the Okanagan winery have better balances.

December 6, 2019 - Neh, passable Cabernet with nice fruit but not a great finish. Low QPR - spend a few extra bucks on the red icon or look elsewhere.

September 29, 2019 - Used an aerator. Bell pepper and eucalyptus. Depth and concentration of flavour. Exceptional quality-price. Great vintage.
