Community Tasting Notes 3

August 16, 2020 - One off purchase ($11.99) from the big box wine store about a month ago, and a return to wine prose after yesterday's wine Bacchinalian party. PnP. Very grassy on the initial opening, with key lime, Meyer lemon, blood orange, grapefruit, tart tropical fruit and, as well-observed in the prior notes, a brackish note. Light yellow gold, light to medium bodied, very light legs. Light to medium acidity, generally light on persistence and intensity, medium complexity. I used to drink Bernardus's wines frequently--my ex was a member of their wine club--but it's probably at least 2-3 years since I've had one, and maybe 10 since I've had this bottling (as a side note probably not interesting to anyone other than me, I once sat next to Mr. Griva at a Bernardus winemaker dinner at Bernardus Lodge, and he seemed like a lovely man). This is a solid SB with just a touch of semillon, great qpr, super accompaniment to sushi and has made it into night 3 in solid shape. It's real competition for Kim Crawford in price and quality, a favorite quaffing wine, but I remember it having a bit more substance and lift in past vintages. It's nothing you're ever going to confuse with the Cardinale Intrada, the Yount Ridge or Spottswoode SBs, but then, at a fraction of the price, what did you expect? For a relatively light, balanced, warm weather sipper, you could do far worse and this is recommended. 88+. Drink in the next couple of years or so.

August 3, 2019 - Reasonably priced SB (small % semillion mixes in) with a palate and nose sharing things like green papaya, key lime, yellow raspberry, unripe nectarine - has a underlying green/bitterness.

February 6, 2019 - Light-medium straw. Yellow tropical fruits, whipped cream, salt lick, stream water. Medium body (I believe there is a small % Semillon), pineapple, lime pith, grapefruit peel, grassy herbs.
