Community Tasting Notes 2

June 22, 2022 - Tasted blind. Med ruby w/ a garnet hue. Hint of Brett and VA. Med+ intensity overripe strawberries, red cherries, black plum, black fig, earth, smoke, and some baking spices from French oak. Developing. Dry, w/ med+ to high acidity, med+, polished tannins, and high alcohol (14%). Full-bodied, with med+ to pronounced intensity, med (+) length, with herbs and licorice on the finish. Complex, nicely balanced, it has some age already but is likely to improve with further aging. This is surprisingly approachable considering 2016 is supposed to be a huge vintage.

Potential varieties include Sangiovese, Nebbiolo (but this seems too ripe) or Corvina (this is too structured). Quality and oak levels point to Brunello or a Chianti Classico Riserva/Gran Selezione. The very well-integrated oak and old school character point to Brunello. Aged for 24 mos, 60% in French barriques, and 40% in large Slavonian oak barrels.

June 22, 2022 - 4thWednesdays - Tom and Sean hosting (Sky Lounge, Hanover Southhampton, Houston, TX): TASTED BLIND
    A: Pale garnet
N: Pronounced nose of Cooked strawberries, cooked sour red cherries, plum, **pomegranate**, cranberry, violet, lavender, MUSHROOM, green tarragon, dried thyme, mushroom, wet earth, VA
Dry, medium (+) dusty tannins,, medium alcohol, pronounced intensity, medium (+) length, medium (+) acidity , long finish, medium body
Complex, rather lovely balance of fruit concentration and acidity. The VA is nicely integrated, the length and intensity are optimal too. Its an outstanding wine.

Suitable for ageing most assuredly. Still fresh fruit here and the flowers are vibrant with enough tannin and acid to keep it fresh while it increases in complexity.

    Guesses and Mistakes:
I need to trust my notes because they clearly say Brunello and yet I didn’t guess it. Lets avoid that in the future. The VA, cherries and mushrooms would have sealed the deal. Face palm!
