November 12, 2022 - University Club NYC "joy of wine" 2022 event.

2nd wine and much larger then the prior Chapelle De Blagny Meursault Premiere Cru 2015. Notable wood is present right on the nose. Large mouthfeel with a viscosity approaching "creamy". Creamy mid palette with a notable melon and pear flavor. Long finish which just goes on and on with lingering citrus, pear and a residue of cedar wood.

December 25, 2021 - I am scoring this as 'Excellent' on the CT scale and although I like it I do have reservations about what I think are oak derived dominant elements. However, I am also aware that whilst I know a bit about wine, there is a lot I do not know. Here the question is, will the fruit come up over time, or will the oak eat the fruit? I can't answer that question with confidence, but better palates probably can.

The wine is under the loathsome cork, tasting note made after a day open, undecanted.

Colour is pale white gold and very bright. Promises a fresh young white.

Nose is basically unchanged over 24 hours. There's strong honey dew melon, along with some cheese/curd and potent vanillan and caramel notes and, for me, a slightly irritating pencil shaving element (speaking of barrel ferment and maybe also new oak ageing). I have done some research but can't find much about how this actually made. Perhaps what I ascribe to oak is chalky minerality?

The palate has lost a bit of the melon that balanced it out nicely, yesterday. The slightly bitter note that I ascribe to oak is just a touch more prominent and I really don't think the texture is right for minerality - there is just a hint of coarseness that takes me to oak. As I have mentioned, I don't have a good enough palate to state with confidence that this is oak, but that is where I would go if pushed.

This is a very fine wine indeed and, depending on how you like your White Burgundy it may be you have no issues with it at all. I am probably being picky and I come more from a German Riesling angle, which does colour things. I don't think this has quite the balance and poise of the 2014 that I had at this time last year, but again I am being picky. I don't think many would be unhappy if you poured this. I will, however, demur from the view that this will get better with time. The slight bitterness I detect and the slight coarseness have me worried and my experience is that in whites these are elements that tend to become more, not less present over time. However, if you love this style and maker and have a different view, you could well be right - I am not a White Burgundy expert by any stretch.

June 5, 2020 - Outstanding white Burgundy: 6 of the very best 1er Crus with Jasper Morris MW (Zoom!): Really big, impactful wine. Marked by oak on the nose, but attractively so (this and the other wines tonight are all 25-33% new oak). Pungent - cedar and pine woods. Creamy, but lovely citrus on the mid-palate gives definition (and reflects the vintage), and there's menthol to add complexity. Very long, delicious mealy finish. Jasper comments that Gagnard's wines really come alive in the first three years, close down and then return with interest around ten years.

June 5, 2020 - Great White Burgundy: 6 of the Very best 1er Crus with Jasper Morris (67@Home Zoom Tasting): Great nose straight away, ripe orchard fruits, a touch of soft vanilla spice, good cut and energy and a very nice mineral finish. Lots to like here and a great start to the tasting
