Community Tasting Notes 1

    February 1, 2017 - From a 0,7 liter bottle.

Developed, deep golden yellow color. Very distinctive and quite weird nose with somewhat greasy aromas of creaminess, rich blue cheese, some browned butter, a little bit of oxidative bready character and a hint of goat milk cheese. I'm confused here. Fortunately the wine tastes more "normal" than the nose leads you to believe. It feels full-bodied and relatively concentrated by the age on the palate with mature medium-sweet flavors of sweet lemon marmalade, honeyed richness, tangy key lime, some browned butter, a little bit of farmhouse apple juice and a hint of stony minerality. The wine feels moderately high in acidity, which lends it good sense of balance and nice structure. The finish is rich, long and medium-sweet with fresh acidity and complex, quite tertiary flavors of lemon marmalade, some browned butter, a little bit of tangy green apple, a hint of honey and a touch of cooked cream.

A very developed Dönnhoff Spätlese at its peak. The nose is quite striking and rather weird here, making me question whether the wine is still OK, but fortunately the taste spirits all my suspicions away. On the palate the wine is wonderfully harmonious with fully developed, rich and ever-so-slightly oxidative flavors of dried citrus fruits, creamy richness and honeyed sweetness. The nose takes a small toll on the score; otherwise this is a delicious and thoroughly tasty Spätlese at its peak. Drink, don't keep.
