June 19, 2022 - 2005 Volnay Premier Cru Tasting and Lunch (San Francisco): Ruby. Stemmy scents with warm, ripe fruit in the background. More soil comes through over time. At first, rather stern, blockish, simple black fruit, but this loosens up, revealing real sweetness, excellent acidity, and a lovely soil finish. Now is probably not the optimal time, but significant potential.

November 10, 2013 - Quite dark. Mentholated aromas of candied cherry in a wet, magical forest. Full, dense, rich palate with layers of crystalline sour candies to go with the haunting, delacy of Volnay. Amazing pasty pinot sap that only comes from great burgundy. 1+ minute finish. A multi-wow wine. I wish I had more. Some say '05 was too ripe but this has perfect balance. I wish I could find more. Looks like this isn't available at all anymore.

July 18, 2012 - A nose of dark red fruits and sappy varietal notes, then a finely textured palate, consistently weighted and quite firm. The texture of the palate lifted it but the lack of any real interest in the bouquet disappointed.

November 29, 2007 - Winestreet Does 2005 Burgundy (Kozlak's, North Oaks, MN): My second taste of this. Open, floral, and expressive. Gorgeously ripe fruit. Compared with the previous bottle, this showed better integrated oak and riper fruit.

November 29, 2007 - Winestreet Celebrates 2005 Burgundy (Potel, Jadot, Bouchard, Girarding, others): Even better than the Volnay Vielles Vignes. The nose is very expressive giving predominantly dark fruit and brown sugar. In the mouth this is awesome stuff. Extremely thick but has a great texture. Great flavor intensity. Great balance. Extremely tannic. Really needs some time to show what it's got. Excellent.

(Potel Nicolas Volnay Caillerets) Medium-plus colour - almost purple. A wide and really interesting nose of black-shaded fruit over a base of coffee. The finest tannins yet - they are only faintly astringent, despite their abundance. The fruit on the palate is very clean and understated yet very long. This is a fantastic wine and worth a special search.
