    May 2, 2024 - Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli 2015-2016-2017-2018 et 2019

November 25, 2023 - I bought this bottle at the winery for my visit in 2021. Already there it was standing out between the other two GS from Mazzei, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola. Last saturday's bottle was just a confirmation that this is a great Sangiovese, and it's great that Mazzei changed their style from new wood to very traditional winemaking, I wish they would do the same for their annata and Riserva!
Getting to the wine, it had quite intense red color, which can be expected from a warm 2017 vintage. The nose it's really not what we expected. The smell is fresh, balsamic, with herbs, orange, earthy and cruncy red fruits. On the palate it seems graced by the altitude, not showing the typically harsh tannins of the 2017 but a more fresh profile, with still nice and lively tannins balanced by a quite high but not disturbing acidity. In the mouth it's intense and leave a long and pleasant finish to close the sip. It can definitely age longer but it's very nice to drink now, so if you don't like the typcal traits of the aging I would not wait any longer.
