April 27, 2024 - Without realizing it, we have drunk a bottle of this wine in April 2022, 2023, and now 2024. Fruity, black cherry flavors, with hints of spice and herbs. This wine has some tannins, but won’t stand up to roasted meat. We like it best with pasta and my homemade red sauce.

April 14, 2023 - Very good Amarone; we paired it with padta and red sauce tonight .

April 17, 2022 - This Venetian red blend has hints of dark chocolate, blackberries, and espresso. It is deep and bold but rather simple. We enjoyed it with my Italian meat loaf (beef, pork, turkey, and hot Italian sausage) and French green beans from Lidl. The wine is also from Lidl. We don’t have much experience with Amarone, and this was a nice introduction.

September 12, 2020 - When I saw Lidl was selling Amarone for cheap I was intrigued; I very much enjoyed my previous experience with Amarone, and their Barolo isn't bad for the price so I figured I should try it.

Amarone is an intriguing, labor-intensive wine: the producers dry the grapes on bamboo shoots prior to pressing, which very much concentrates the juice prior to fermentation. The result: rich, full-bodied wines that are high in alcohol content and very, very smooth.

This particular wine certainly has those characteristics. Deep, dark garnet in color, the nose is moderately aromatic with definitive raisin and plum notes. The tannins and acidity are both moderate, and the high alcohol level adds supple smoothness to the texture. The flavor has ripe cherry notes, red plum and some licorice notes, but there isn't much else. The finish is unremarkable with more of the same plum and licorice notes. In a strange way, perhaps because of the mouthfeel, this is somewhat reminiscent of port.

Not a superb example of an Amarone, but what do you expect for $18? Critics warn of Amarone under $30, but this wine is worth ignoring their warning. For the price it's nevertheless enjoyable, and it went very well with aged gouda.
