Community Tasting Notes 7

June 10, 2008 - Nothing much going on here. There's a thinness -- an absence of earthiness and complexity -- that belies the varietal. Decent enough/slightly tart finish. Given the vintage, I guess you can't put lipstick on a pig...even in the Piedmonte.

August 22, 2007 - The wine was a little thin but drinkable. It had medium to light body and soft fruits. Not bad value for the price.

May 7, 2006 - I decanted and drank in a proper glass with some decent pizza tonight. Definitely showed better than at the tasting I described a few weeks ago, hence a slightly higher rating. The nose had some fruit and spice. The palate was fruit with some earthiness, but nothing approaching complexity. Everything seemed muted. Overall I can't say this is a memorable Barbera.

I came back to this after a few hours. The nose now has dark fruit and raisins, and the palate has the same plus the same earthiness it had earlier and some sour cherries at the finish. 2002 was a very weak vintage in Piedmont, and I'm afraid I'm getting all there is to this. Vietti is one of my favorite Italian winemakers, and they probably did the best they could with what they had that year.

April 21, 2006 - I brought this to a wine-tasting. The glasses were small, and there was no decanting. Perhaps as a result, the nose was barely noticeable. The main sensation on the palette was earthiness. I've had other Barberas and other wines from Vietti I've enjoyed a lot more. Barbera generally is for quaffing, but even by that standard this was disappointing. I have three more bottles left, which I will consume under better circumstances with meals. Perhaps that wil let the wine show better.

December 10, 2005 - What you would expect from an 02. I think it was thin but drinkable., as good as an o2 piemonte can be i suppose.
