Community Tasting Notes 4

March 26, 2017 - PnP, initial aromas of roses, burnt tire, rhubarb, and rust. Initial perception: over the hill.

Giving it 10-15 minutes, the wine reveals lush herbs, cranberry, rhubarb, leather, hot patch, smoke and old wood finish the nose.

In the mouth there is plenty of acidity left here- this must have been a monster back in the early 90's... The fruit has started to fade, I'd really like to have seen this 10 years ago. Flavors of sour plum, muddled herbs, and a stony minerality drive home. It's a bit simple, I am surprised.

After about 45 minutes, the wine had begun to fade and all I was left with was a bottle of rhubarb-rust water. Losing roughly half of the wine. It's all good though, I paid $10.00usd for the bottle, so I really can't complain here.

Overall, for a nearly 30 year old bottle of domestic pinot noir in an area that was just gaining a name for itself, I am very impressed that it drank as well as it did.

Bravo to the good people at Byron!

November 28, 1991 - At home at Thanksgiving dinner with K, Bruce, Janet, Eric and Carol. Good ruby color. Fragrant nose; flowery: roses and cherry. Flavor is OK. Cherry notes. Good "grip." 5-11-15-7: 88/100.

November 22, 1991 - At home in the evening. Rich, smoky ruby color. Big, smoky, smoldering nose packs a real varietal, roasted fruit punch. Black cherry. This character dominates the mouth as well, but not quite enough to completely cover somewhat vinegary, hollow flavor sensations. A good Pinot Noir, although not quite the wine I thought when I first tasted it several days ago. 5-12-13-6: 86/100.

November 20, 1991 - With Jeff Glick at Standing Room Only. Good ruby color. Nice legs. Sharply focused varietal fruit. Has that hint of "tomato" all great red Burgs have. Fine palate, black cherries and tar and LOADS of flavor. 5-11-17-8: 91/100.
