April 10, 2024 - The Cyclist and I decided to see how a pair of 2018 Howell Mountain cabs are coming along. Admittingly, these tend to drink best with a few more years, based upon past experience. I gave this two hours in the decanter, and it was drinking well with some improvement with time. rather fruit foward, red/black, not surprising given that TRB is the winemaker. Not overly complex but some hints of anise, chocolate. well integrated tannins. hint of smoke/dryness on the finish.
a bit more fruit forward than other Howell Mountain cabs, so it will likely drink well early.

June 17, 2023 - Four hour decant. Very very deep dark electric magenta color. Blackberry, plum, strawberry jam, burnt caramel corn, powdered sugar, Italian parsley, and subtle milk chocolate and anise. Smooth, dry palate, with satiny, tongue coating acidity. Firm, medium intensity tannins on the longish finish.

This is youthful and also more serious (i.e., not as confectionery) than my notes make it sound. It’s quite rich, but not yet fully open. I hope to wait another year for the next bottle. There’s no potential built into my score. This will absolutely get better.

May 15, 2022 - Dark and inky in color, those small Howell Mountain berries in action. Really opened up after 2 hours, delicious.

February 5, 2022 - Good wine - I think this will improve a bit. Came in a bit hot after a few hours in the decanter. Mouth staining and tannic but the goods are there. Drink next one in 4-5 years.
