Community Tasting Notes 8

October 2, 2023 - Popped and poured; consumed over two days and there was little in way of development over the course of those two days. The 2019 Sandlands Carignane “CCC” is packed with character…but there is a catch: it needs considerable more time to really deliver all the goods. The wine pours a deep ruby with a purple hue. Medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. No signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is drop dead gorgeous with notes of fresh, ripe dark fruits, a bouquet of red flowers, cumin, spiced meats, and crushed gravel. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+?) tannins and medium(+?) acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium with a somewhat austere, mineral finish. Honestly, I feel like the structure is “dominating the room” at this point and needs more time to settle in. But when it does…and it will…folks who have been patient will be duly rewarded. Hold. If I had more, I wouldn’t touch until after 2027.

October 2, 2022 - Liked this. Tart red fruit. Fresh and good at the table, if maybe a little simple.

May 21, 2022 - 12.6% abv. Medium purple, very aromatic. Raspberry and blue fruit, mint and floral highlights. Excellent depth and length. Beautiful balance. Delicious now and over the next several years.

February 18, 2022 - Drunk over 2-days. This, my first experience with a Sandlands wine, left me feeling like the nerd at High School just found his "folk" after years wandering alone in the desert. I may be mixing one too many metaphors with that last, but wow did this wine wow me. The type of wine that makes wine tasting fun again kind of experience. It didn't hurt that I paired with Red sauce and meatballs night-1, but it was equally enchanting on the 2nd night open with a less perfect Salmon pairing. Energetic, vibrant, swelling with air, "crunchy," I suppose are some descriptors. You could say simply fruited (red) and not fiercely complex, to which I'd cry balderdash! The different flavors and scents that appeared over the span of this wine's drinking life, all fresh and alive, were expansive from spearmint to Indian spices, cranberries and citrus to rosemary and leather skin. Deep structure, changeable, living, and exciting... more apt descriptors. I'm sold and fully in on the clique. Now if I can just get an allocation.
