April 14, 2024 - Pronounced nose of black plumb and cherry, some smoky notes and cigar box
High acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, full bodied, pronounced intensity on palatte, lovely follow through from nose, med + finish.

Lovely wine, drinking well but easily has another 3 to 5 years

September 2, 2023 - Solid stellenbosch bordeaux blend at a reasonable price point.

Prominent nose of blackberry, black plum with subtle cigar box. Full bodied, high alcohol, medium tannins with a lovely finish. Started off a bit closed, used an aerator snd it opened up nicely.

Lovely to drink now, but I think it will continue to improve in bottle

July 1, 2022 - Solid. What stands out is the smoothness of the wine despite being that young. Pretty fruit forward showing lots of black fruit and blackberry. Subtle oaky notes but not too much. Finish was medium long

April 22, 2022 - We have a few bottles of this vintage and thought we would break our usual habit of cellaring for 10 years before drinking because of the increased proportion of Merlot. Opened 5h early but not decanted.
Fruity nose but too much simple ‘ester’ character for me. The palate is smooth and shows red currants and rather ‘jammy’, sweet fruit but none of the darker fruit, complexity, and tannins I expected. ‘Easy drinking’. There was prominent vanilla from the oak but limited acidity and restrained tannins. The balance is not right. Not a typical ‘John X’ for me.
Perhaps it is just in its juvenile stage as yet. I will give it time and hope it settles down and shows more. In the meantime, we will just enjoy our older vintages.
