Community Tasting Notes 3

having tasted several bottles of 1996 and 1997, as well as a 1979 in the last year, i figured this would be another mature and delicious experience.
On this particular night, i found the nose to be classic tahbilk shiraz, with the lovely floral perfume all of their shiraz develop over time. However, the palate was thin and short. Acidity was noticeably shrill. This didn’t improve significantly over the course of the evening, nor the following day after 24h. We opened a 96 tahbilk reserve that showed at a similar level at first when tasted side to side, but the latter opened up after an hour or so. It was showing better than the 94 1860 vines. Both were lean, but the palate of the 96 was more rewarding. This was the consensus among the 3 tasters.

Overall, a wine i would prefer other vintages to this one.
Not over the hill, but proceed with caution

September 16, 2014 - Decanted 30 minutes, particularly for sediment. Resolved and mature, this has black cherry, baking spices, wild raspberry, and wild raspberry seeds, with underlying forest floor and leather. It's a subtle wine with some Northern Rhone character but most uniquely Victorian. Kept improving with each glass. Drink now-2016.

April 22, 2011 - Victoria's best shiraz? Another wonderful showing of a retrained gamey savoury style. Light and sinewy with a spicey gamey fruit character reminisce of good pinot. Showing its age but in great nick for a 17yr old. Lovely old fruits and old oak. Crazy bargain at $30 at auction.
