February 23, 2024 - Held a tasting for our local wine tasting group, Bymarkens Vinprovning last night. Theme Nebbiolo from Northern Italy where the idea was to showcase Nebbiolo, not only from Langhe, but also Valtellina DOCG (Lombardy), Ghemme DOCG (Alto Piemonte) and Roero DOCG (North of Langhe). Should add that all wines were tasted blind during the evening and prices are discussed only after we have discussed what we have tried.

    The following lineup:

2018 Ca Morei Valtellina DOCG Superiore
2018 Rovellotti Ghemme DOCG Chioso dei Pomi
    2018 Malvirà Roero DOCG
2021 Mauro Veglio Langhe Nebbiolo DOC Angelo
    2019 Lodali Barbaresco DOCG Lorens
2019 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo DOCG Bussia

Wonderful wines all and above all with their respective expressions. Valtellina, Ghemme and Roero with their slightly lighter and more elegant appearance, but clear tannins. Above all Rovellotti from Ghemme, super fine tannins, a wine that grew during the evening.

But of course the wines from Langhe are something a little extra, Mauro Veglio's Langhe became a favorite during the evening, clear fruit, light and fine, the difference is the short finish compared to Barolo and Barbaresco. Lodali and Aldo Conterno are of course the big stars of the evening. Aldo Conternos Bussia has a depth and complexity that surpasses all other wines, of course the price picture should also be able to show that.

An additional wine to go with the food, Francesco Rinaldi's Rocche dell´Annunziata 2018 is right in the window right now, incredibly good and accessible, as most 2018s are at the moment. The food was perfect with our wines from Langhe, a creamy Salsicca pasta.

To end the evening, I selected four wines from completely different regions and grapes:

2020 The Standish Wine Company Shiraz Lamella
2019 Matthiasson Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2018 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Pinot Nero Riserva Lafóa
2017 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino

There, Matthiasson was the winner around the table, with his fine more elegant expression of a Napa Cab, with Colterenzio's Pinot Nero in second place. But all four performed at their best, I must add that Standish Lamella was very young, despite about 4 hours in the carafe, it was only after the tasting that we discovered that this wine will become fantastic with time.

A lovely evening with close friends, good food and great wines 🍷❤🙌

February 4, 2023 - Festa dal barolo AM tasting

Cooler fruited, violet more than rose florals, spice and freshness. Still pretty tight and does not open much over the tasting. Good lift and freshness and well as sense fo structure and balance . Midweighted and classically proportioned. Fell s like a little unripe pips texturally. Outstanding and too closed/ young for me to really get a good feel of it.

February 4, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata was a highlight of my recent flight of 2018s, lifting from the glass with vivid black cherries complemented by autumnal spices and hints of shaved cedar. This is lifted and juicy in feel, with bright red berries and crisp acidity that adds energy throughout as rosy inner florals form toward the close. Nuances of licorice and balsam herbs linger through the long and lightly structured finale. This is a remarkably pretty expression of Rocche dell’Annunziata, which is refined for three years in large casks.

February 4, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo: Masterclass (and burgers) (The Pool/Grill): A pleasant surprise for me and a wine that makes me thinking that perhaps we should be making a visit here in a future trip. I mostly associate the winery with wines we bought from them back in the 60’s all of which have proven to be very strong and well-aged (in the back of my head I think just a splash of Barbera could have been part of it). This was a different animal entirely. All dark red fruits and soft and lighter bodied and a bit juicy and with that bit of lift. A great expression of Rocche which is a great La Morra vineyard and one to always keep an eye out for. Very nice and a good start.

February 4, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo 2023: The '18 Rocche is an impressive new wine from Rinaldi. At this stage, the aromatics stood out, while the palate shows a level of structure and tannic heft that few wines from this vintage do, making this one of the less approachable 2018s in my opinion.

The aromatics were immediately striking, with sweet red roses, orange peel, sweet spices, mint, and pure red berry fruits. It's a very fresh, red fruited and red floral nose, with a bit of extra lift from this citrus note that I noticed in a lot of 2018s. On the palate, the wine was significantly less inviting than the aromatics suggested. It was medium in body with good concentration for the vintage, fairly stern tannins, and medium to high acidity. I found similar red fruit and red floral tones and also a bit of raw meat / iron tones in the wine on the palate, but it wasn't showing as much complexity as the aromatics.
