Community Tasting Notes 5

February 8, 2007 - Read a nice WS review of the 2004 Ch. St. Jean Chardonnay Robert Young Vineyard. So, I was wandering around a wine shop and saw the 2003. Could not remember which vintage I was looking for so I picked up 3 bottles. Wish I had hewed to my standard rule which is to shop with a list.

Way too much oak. Not very much fruit. Indistinct flavors. Slight oxidation and not in a positive way. Thank goodness the lasagna covered up the taste of the wine.

February 15, 2006 - Nice, balanced chard, which really grows on you over time in the glass. Will improve further with age?

January 31, 2006 - Really tasty and enjoyable. Good concentration and complexity. Had that lemon curd note that seems typical of CSJ chards.

December 12, 2005 - I don't know if the problem is with Robert Young Vineyard or with Chateau St. Jean, but this combination is not worth the $23.00 I spent on this wine. A while back I looked for Robert Young wines, I also looked for Chateau St. Jean. Separately they have each made some premium wine, together they do not. The last few years of this combination have been disappointing.
