Community Tasting Notes 2

August 21, 2011 - Wedding in Bali - Lunch at Di Mare (Di Mare, Karma Kandara Resort): After the flawed bottle the previous time around, it was a relieve to be able to see what I had missed with this bottle - and I must say it was really good. It started out with a rich, ripe nose which was so very 2003, with washes of red cherry and berry aromas, and a touch of blueberries shading into cassis notes, floating on a bed of toasty, earthy tones with a bit of funky sous bois on the side. Very nice, if a bit on the ripe side. The palate was surprisingly fresh after that. Although still ripe on the attack, with blue and black berries and more dark cherries ringing quite clearly at the fore, there was a lightness of touch and a good freshness on the midpalate that really lifted the wine just before the it slid gently into a toasty, earthy finish where characteristic Morey spice emerged alongside a nice meaty backdrop. A very accomplished 2003, this was very nice indeed. The only issue perhaps was the slightly truncated finish, which was rather symtomatic of the vinatge. Apart from that, this was drinking really nicely. Rather surprisingly evolved - this good fine for drinking now and anytime over the next five years. All in all, a solid wine that got me wondering whether it was just good wine-making or whether the 2003s are finally starting to come into their own.

October 25, 2008 - Chapitre d'Automne de la St Hubert (Nicolas Restaurant, Keong Saik Street, Singapore): I had three pours of this wine, all from different bottles, and all were flawed with TCA to some extent. The first two had strong whiffs of wet cardboard, iodine and fish market. The third bottle had the wet cardboard, but was thankfully less fishy. Once I got past the nose and moved to taste the wine, it showed leather, funk and gym socks, along with a rather flat, unidimensional cool cherry tone. There was some sappiness to the fruit, and there was something rich and muscular under this wine once, but all I had was the remnants of what might have been. This was just about falling apart.
