Community Tasting Notes 5

May 15, 2024 - First time trying this producer and it was a shocker. Not that I’m going to judge his whole range on one wine, but man, was this disappointing. Coming from quite a warm vintage in Burgundy and you can really see that taking a toll on the quality. The fruit seemed to develop rapidly, giving the wine sweet-fruited tones, while the tannins remained unripe, resulting in a strange, bitter and rather rough edge, making everything come off as disjointed. Has potential to come together, but I won’t bet $275 on it.

May 13, 2024 - Ruby, leaning garnet in the glass.

Nose pointed straight to Burgundy, and specifically a producer on the nattier side. It's quite perfumed with a strong sour cherry vibe and definitely whole bunchy.

The palate here is quite transparent and shows a spectrum of red, blue and black fruit. Structurally this is a huge pinot with grippy tannins that together with the flavour profile might have been Gevrey.

Good bit of acidity here and a nice mineral streak completes the wine, although I felt like this wasn't quite ready yet and had the bones to go a decade more even.

It's a great wine but one has to wonder about value. I didn't pay for this and having tasted it, wouldn't shell out more than 100-150 SGD for this.

    It's 275 SGD retail.

January 15, 2024 - Such a tale of two cities. Originally tried the producer given recommendations of similarity to Prieure Roch. I can see that on the nose - more blue fruited and sour cherry hits; almost leaning towards gamay territory. Natural but not offensively so, and I liked that. The palate though, completely different story. At first I thought the wine was cooked, but given the fruit on the nose, that couldn't be. What I originally thought was soy turned into more of a smokey reduction. after a few hours in the decanter, it turned more chalky and drying of a tannin. I still thought it was totally disjointed for a pinot (it's a pinot right?) and I will not be coming back for more.

Btw I couldn't find a way to tell which vintage this was as the only identification was the cork under the foil (for those who care)

    Nose: 91
Palate: 84 (it was not good...)

October 28, 2023 - Loved this even though most at the table preferred the more classically styled 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin paired up against this. Decanted for 2 hours. Very surprising and complex nose of Cola and sour cherries, great length. Drinking great already, but certainly not a crowd pleaser. Durieux whites and reds both have a distinct gueuze-esque style sourness which mixes the best of both worlds for me.

April 28, 2023 - 13% ABV. By the glass serving into Sydonios Le Septentrional glass (“No” day): Pale ruby with garnet hues to the eyes.

Immediately obvious on the nose as the upper echelon of the Bourgogne rouge style, with dark red cherry cola, dried florals, hints of fine smoke and well integrated new French oak.

Fine silky tannins that is again already well integrated on the palate, layered with a streak of minerality and well defined acidity.

94-95 points easy to me and a great showcase of this producer indeed.
