April 24, 2024 - Stunning how good this wine continues to be - perfectly balanced with such amazing concentration of dark black fruit without being cloying or jammy. From the moment we popped the cork, we smelled cassis and blueberry and were in awe of the aromas and excited as we decanted awaiting the pleasure to come …and it delivered. This wine is in a prime drinking place and has a power and finesse that is magic. It lingers for over a minute as it evolves in your mouth, showing off why it is one of the best. This bottle was superb and consumed during our 29th Anniversary at Steak 48

March 17, 2024 - still so young and powerful, better on the 2nd or even 3rd day.
Everything is there, just need more time to come all together. -

December 3, 2023 - The 2001 Harlan shows slightly dried blackberry and plum from the outset, augmented by a little eucalyptus as it opens. There's good depth on the nose and palate. The tannins are a little woolly and the alcohol shows a bit on the palate but the package is large-scaled enough to work relatively well. Good, though it feels a little artificial with the fresh leather and oak notes.

December 2, 2023 - California Wine Weekend; 12/1/2023-12/3/2023 (Mos Eisley Cantina & Waterhouse Restaurant): Nose; Blue and black fruit, new leather, graphite and a little eucalyptus (martha's esque) as it develops in glass. Palate: Exceptional depth to the dark fruit, and a fine seam of graphite shows throughout. Rounded edges from the oak and some vanilla and espresso bean show. Finish: Oak gets more apparent here with more new leather and vanilla. However the blue fruit from this part of the valley shines, and it is less bombastic than I remember it overall. 96+, just a hair ahead of the Thorevilos for me tonight.

5/25/2006 (link)(Harlan Estate) It had a pretty mute nose out of the gates but then developed liquor-like aromas of dark raspberry and blueberry. The palate was hot and very syrupy. Major gobs here. No tannin really at first but then they struck after around 20 minutes opened. The tannins were the best part of the wine. Ripe and not too sweet and perfectly proportioned. But that's the inly thing I liked. The finish was decent but not particularly long. Have had the '93, '94, '97, '00 and '01 and still just do not see what all the fuss is about. The profile of this wine is just so exceedingly rich and it is so ripe as almost to be a freak of nature.
