Community Tasting Notes 3

June 2, 2009 - 1 hr decant in med-base (probably didn't need it, but I got distracted on some office work); medium dark typical garnet red wine color, clean and pretty. There were some pretty floral/rose/bright-cherry scents on the initial pop that seem to have buried themselves in the wine. An obvious Bath 'n Body works perfumed lotion smell is apparent in the bouquet, kind of like their pear stuff mixed with whatever the violet colored lotion is. I really like the nose on this year's Navarrouge, the best yet I've encountered of several vintages. On the palate, I get candied cherry soda-pop, perhaps some vanilla, again of the soda-pop variety, and still more bright cherry flavors. On the finish, silty tannins briefly stretch on and an ever so slight bitterness intrudes on the cherry parade to bully around the poor things. The effect is to turn the cherry parade in San Francisco into something more mixed mountain-berry mash-up like in the foothills. Slightly rough-edged and not altogether seamless, this is nevertheless a quaffable table wine that will pair easy with a large assortment of food stuffs. Good acid balance, as Navarro wines generally display. This is heavier on the lighter Pinot characteristics this year, and I like that. Excellent QPR for what it's bringing in the '06 vintage. 87+ pts and go ahead and drink it by 2011 if you can.

May 23, 2009 - Much better than first bottle. Slight tannins, earthy, with some fruit.
