Community Tasting Notes 5

April 29, 2024 - No detailed notes but this was delish. Great bouquet, mainly fruits at first with ripe cherry, and strawberry as well as a great rose perfume. After a few minutes a bit of mushroom and earth/autumn leaves began to poke through too.

Palate was bright and juicy, less fruity and more flinty and umami with the earthy tones coming through more. Finish was medium, flavour concentration relatively high.

Still young and quite primary, but think a couple years in the cellar will bring out the savoury tones more, if that is your thing. Went very well with grilled salmon at this stage of life. Good value for 30 CAD, would buy again. Think it is hard to find a better Pinot Noir in this price category.

  • eyewino Does not like this wine: flawed

March 8, 2024 - Brilliant ruby fading to pink with a thin watery rim. Nose of raspberry, bing cherry, crushed rock, and A LOT of smoke/ash. Palate is medium-bodied with good acidity, but is dominated by a harsh smokey taste that dominates any fruit flavors. Medium length finish of smoke and red berries.

I tasted this at the winery and liked it enough to hand-carry a bottle home to the US. I can't believe it tasted like this at the winery - there is no way I would have wanted more. Smoke taint? Flawed? If this is a flaw in the winemaking process, it is unlike any other I have experienced. I guess I will leave it without a numerical rating, since I am not sure this bottle is representative of the wine in general. The rest of the bottle was poured down the drain.

EDIT - tasted four hours later, it was obviously just extremely CORKED.

March 1, 2024 - Dichtes Rubinrot. Faszinierend. 90 vvPunkte

November 11, 2023 - Univinum wine fair (@EDEKA Ueltzhöfer, Heilbronn, Germany): Glass: Red Wine
*** brief notes for my own memory from tasting sip. No rating ***
Wow, compared to Saalwächter already open and very joyful. More German, fruity side of Pinot, but actually really joyful. Like it. 88-89

September 23, 2023 - Master class "German Spätburgunder" with Caro Maurer MW (Hochschule Geisenheim, Germany): Flight 3, Wine 1, presented by Steffen Rings. Bright medium ruby colour. Red and dark fruit, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, spices and smoke, with medium-level acidity, ripe, round, well-integrated tannin, and good length. Smooth, creamy, yoghurt-like texture. Very good value.
