Community Tasting Notes 2

    March 9, 2016 - 12,5% alcohol.

Dark, quite developed and moderately translucent pomegranate red color with an aged maroon hue. Very developed, dark-toned and slightly oxidative nose with ripe aromas of sweet plums and prunes, some dusty earth, light strawberry jam tones, a little bit of raisiny character, tertiary hints of Tawny Port and beef stew and a touch of caramel. The wine is medium-bodied, lively and quite developed on the palate with sweet-toned flavors of dried dates, ripe black cherries, some raisiny tones, a little bit of caramel, slightly bitter woody tones and a hint of vanilla. The wine stays quite balanced with its moderately high acidity, whereas the tannins are almost nonexistent, making the mouthfeel very silky. The finish is long, somewhat oxidative and very complex with quite sweet-toned flavors of plummy dark fruits and ripe cherries, some dried dates, light raisiny tones, a little bit of oxidative caramel and beef jerky and a hint of tertiary nuttiness.

A nicely developed Rioja Gran Reserva, but it is quite obvious that oxidation has started to creep in and the wine is (and has been) on a downhill already for some time. The wine offers still quite a bit of pleasure, as the flavors retain good depth, intensity and sense of concentration, although showing their age. Most likely this wine has been much better a decade back.

December 1, 2014 - Brickish brown in colour with a beautiful delicate sweet nose. Quite thin given the age, sour cherry on the palate. I quite liked it but to be honest it is probably past its best.
