April 11, 2010 - Paul's 30th Birthday; 4/10/2010-4/12/2010 (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck Restaurant): Stewed pot of dirt, cherries, horse, leather and fowl feathers. This is funky and rustic and backward. With its age, it could easily fool as a burg especially with that touch of roses too. But the sweeter spectrum of its fruits does give away its grenache makeup. Dirt and garrigue atop aged cherries. Drinking now . Dry dusty finish.

April 10, 2010 - old burgs and rhones tend to converge and this was no exception. complex aged wine.
cockroach on nose. some complexity with salty animal/umaminess/chicken essence (showing that this is a CDP), hint of stale cigarette. a little dried fruit left on the palate with menthol. some dried fruit to be found on palate (thankfully less cockroach!), but primary fruits are going down, down, down. dry on the finish with a little bit more menthol.
Possibly influenced because not a big fan of clos des pape.

April 10, 2010 - Hitting the Big 3-0. (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Very nice, but time to drink up. Not quite at its last legs, but this is clearly in senior citizen category. Really nice nose - sweet kirsch, red cherries, some sweet winter-melon like tones, a touch of dried flowers, a touch of mushrooms, some funky earth, plenty of meatiness and a little whiff of incense and menthol. Very Burg-like. Palate still had a patina of firm tannins and a good backbone and and nice balance. Still plenty of sweet ripe fruit in the shape of dark cherries too, augmented by orange peel flavours, a touch of plum powder and a little bit of ginseng around the edges. Some nice flowery touches shaded the wine at the mid-palate, moving into a longish finish with a touch of drying tannins, some spice, some dried fruit, a little touch of rubber and a seam of ferrous metal tones. Thought it started to unravel a little bit in the finish, but still a really nice wine for those who like their reds with plenty of age.
