October 5, 2023 - pretty sure mine so no guessing, everyone went to RB Bordeaux, but first guesses were St Emilion (Magdelaine). Chris guessed VCC, so he got Certan right. Lighter than some ‘98 RBs, cassis and cocoa, easy tannins, moderate acids. B+/A-

September 26, 2022 - A decant was very important for this bottle. At first, dominated by wet leaves and rot. After a few hours, beautiful clean fruit and cedar, with fresher tertiary notes. A good bottle.

June 12, 2022 - There was a strong stewed fruit on the nose and this was not a good bottle. Perhaps poor storage somewhere along the way.

April 8, 2022 - Elegant, charming Pomerol. Striking, ruby color. Red berries, tobacco, light cedar, and earth. Fresh, nice complexity and length. At the beginning of maturity and should hold for many years.

March 6, 2022 - The 1998 is a pleasant but somewhat uninspiring example of Certan de May. The characteristic mineral, furry, truffley, slightly malty character is there, but this is still showing some chocolaty oak and the depth of the fruit is slightly underwhelming for a good Pomerol vintage 24 years on. Michel Rolland was brought in just a few years later (2003-2012) and, from 2013, Jean-Claude Berrouet of Petrus fame has been brought in as consultant. The potential of this tiny (5.5 ha) estate, planted with 70% Merlot / 25% Cab Franc / 5% Cab Sauvignon, should be clear based on its stellar performance in the 80s. I look forward to trying modern renditions.

(Certan de May) Mean wine. Muddled nose. Palate had the highest acidity of any red wine I have ever had. Like biting into a lime. One sip was too much. Acid just dominated and it truly hurt to drink this. Super muddy. Maybe an off bottle . . . but maybe not cooked because of the ridiculous acidity.
