September 15, 2023 - Dried cherries, roses and herbs with a hint of cocoa formed the cure of this wine. Medium-bodied, elegant, soft and refined, the light finish still offered cherries on the backend. The only 43 I am likely to taste again was not only a taste of history, having been produced during the middle of WW2, it was a super tasting experience. Drink from 2023-2025.

September 3, 2021 - After two wines that were light and fading, this was a dramatic change, with explosive scents as soon as you hover your nose near the glass - scents of what, I couldn't tell you, but there was a lot there, some on the austere stony side and some on the sweeter side with even a hint of oatmeal cookie. Just fuller and more dimension to this than there was to its flightmates from '40 and '37. If any one of these wines still has something there that can be called fruit, this one is it. Broadbent's description of '43 is "best of the wartime vintages," "with richness and fruit but short." That makes sense. I've had the 1949 of this from the same cellar and this one wasn't far behind, if at all, though that doesn't say as much as it might because the '49 was not as impressive as a '49 should be. So in several respects it's hard not to grade this on a curve. Next to a pair of fading and airy wines this stood out at as still having some material to it, but compared to the three in the flight to follow it wasn't especially memorable.

October 19, 2020 - This wine is not showing its age at all. Had it been served blind I would have placed it somewhere in the mid 1980's. Showing a deep red core with a garnet rim, this wine looks and smells so fresh, it's hard to believe the wine is 77 years old. Integrated tannins and moderate acidity made this bottle an absolute pleasure to drink, the balance was perfect. I'm very curious as to how massive this wine must have been when it was first bottled. Right now though, its drinking like a dream...

April 11, 2018 - Bright, beet red in the glass, nose of pineapple, black berry, plum, and a bouquet of salvia, same on the palate, gorgeous Merlot, medium body, lasted the entire two hour lunch, fabulous wine for 75 years of age, elegant, mouth filling, good acid, and a long finish, enjoyed four pours of this oldie but a goodie. thank you Derrald.
