July 18, 2022 - Bought 1x bottle duty paid on a whim. No idea as to the bottle’s provenance. Far, far sweeter than I had anticipated. Almost a pudding-wine sweetness and rather syrupy. Cork was soaked through and there had been some seepage, so I suspect all was not well with this one. Nevertheless, we persevered and it was fine enough if drunk slowly with food.

November 17, 2019 - Inaugural mensual 17th dinner (Nico Osteria) (Chicago, IL): #06-01, 8% abv. This doesn't show the problems of the vintage at all. In fact, this is a very clean, still young edition of this wine. There's that classic Dönnhoff ethereal quality here. Just moderately sweet, and cut by some rounded acids and some green herbs. In fact, I would venture to say that this reminds me a lot of the 2004.

August 29, 2017 - I have been holding a 4 bottle horizontal of 2000 Donnhoff spatlese (one each of Hermannshohle, Brucke, Kirschheck and Kupfergrube) since release, and this was the first bottle opened of the set. Peach dusted with spice and a bit of honey shows the age and botrytis of the vintage. Age has toned the sweetness, such that this is a rich feinherb in balance, and so a lovely dinner wine. The peach tones carry through the finish, and linger long after the sip, when a hint of spice kicks in. If I was served it blind I might guess well-aged kabinett from a richer vintage, as it is not a "big" wine in the way of so many modern spatlesen. Laura and I both found it to be delicious, as well as refreshing. It's a great tribute to a superior site and winemaker, triumphing over an indifferent vintage. Do drink this now/soon.

June 6, 2013 - Amber +1 color. Aroma laden with minerals, pears, with slight oxidation. Balanced on entry, with acidic verve and fatty viscosity. Good fruit, hint of motor oil. Moderate finish, in intensity, complexity and length. Bottle #4 of six.

(Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese) The wines that come from this vineyard are astonishing. 'Nuff said. Shy at first but opened up like fresh bag of microwave popcorn just cut open at around fifteen minutes in. The aromas just exploded from the glass. Salt, slate, white peaches, chamomile tea, the spring onions Pierre talks about in the '01, etc blah, blah, blah . . Stunning! The palate was even better with great interplay of fruits and minerals presented on a very elegant frame. The texture was so lush and soft but still very concentrated. Layers of red fruits, currants, ripe peaches, maybe even raspberries, all with dazzling purity and focus. The finish hints at pomegranite and fresh mint. The acidity is very present but harmonizes with all the other elements on the finish. The finish lasts around one minute.
