Community Tasting Notes 5

May 31, 2019 - A lovely mature Riesling. Deep in colour and providing a little on the nose though not as much as I would have expected. No petrol just the start of that old Riesling smell.
It’s now turning into an almost dry wine with a sharp lime / acid finish which gives a real crisp edge to it while retaining a richness.
The Auslese version I’d imagine is in a marvellous place and for my palate this is getting to the more mature end of the spectrum but I’d imagine now most of the sweetness has been absorbed this will be a slow development.

Open now or drink over a few years and even after then it will be fine.
Other comments me of over the hill are not to their taste or a bad bottle unless you are looking for more classical off dry, fruit and tropical which itself is lovely in the first 10 years of a decent Spatlese. This is a good mature Riesling drinking pretty well.
    Lovely bottle

    February 1, 2017 - 9,5% alcohol.

Deep, luminous honey yellow color with a subtly bronze-hued core. Very rich, complex and rather sweet-toned nose with aromas of dried apricots, some honeyed richness, a little bit of pineapple juice, light mineral tones of stone dust and a developed hint of cooked cream. The wine is medium-bodied, broad and somewhat oily on the palate, yet remarkably crisp and racy at the same time with complex and beautifully layered medium-dry-to-medium-sweet flavors of tart green apples, exotic floral spices, some stony minerality, a little bit of tangy key lime, light buttery notes indicating development, a hint of honeycomb and a touch of apple peel bitterness. The bracing acidity lends the wine tremendous intensity and sense of structure, offsetting most of the sweetness beautifully. The finish is crisp, racy and relatively dry with lengthy, off-dry flavors of lemony citrus fruits, wizened apricots, some exotic pungent spices, a little bit of wet stones, light bitter notes of apple peel and developed hints of vanilla cream and soft butter.

It was odd seeing how all the previous tasting notes described a wine obviously long past its peak, because this was nothing like the wine described below. On the contrary, this is a beautiful, harmonious and incredibly complex Riesling that most likely is sweeter than it tastes like - the wine is so racy with its incisive acidity that it masks away most of the sweetness and lends impressive intensity to the sharp, lemony and mineral flavors. Overall the wine feels a bit more developed than the Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlesen of similar age, but only very slightly. Overall the wine is starting to be close to its plateau of maturity or already there - but most likely it will stay there for years - if not decades - more. Drink or keep.

December 4, 2008 - A night of Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle at Trestle on Tenth (NYC): AP #015. Bright golden-orange colour with a great nose initially that combines petrol, smoke, spices, leafy elements, apples and some dried peach. The palate is nothing like the nose though - disappointingly simple and faint with some smoky apple and peach flavours and a short, drying finish. Seems to be long past its best, as this was fading with some air. Most of the pleasure in this came from the nose which was superb, but it was alarming to see this at this over-the-hill phase so soon.

December 4, 2008 - Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Vertical (Trestle on Tenth): Sadly over the hill despite some initial promise. Dark golden Sauternes-like in color, it starts out with an expressive scent like a basket of red fruits with a strong cherry flavor; this could almost pass for a rosé! Unfortunately, within a half hour it muddles itself into that generic over-the-hill riesling profile of Mott's apple juice. R.I.P.

March 4, 2004 - Cantankerous Wines at Caravelle: Strong petrol and glue on the nose. Resin, lemon. Mostly dry. Tangy, lemon and pine finish. Ech. I don't get it.
