November 1, 2023 - Nose of enormous freshness on graphite, pepper and violet.

A true high-altitude wine with dense juice but magnificent freshness. The aromas follow one another and intertwine with blueberry, oregano and rosemary. This wine is a box of Provence herbs. The wine has a magnificent acidity which makes you forget the 15.5% alcohol with a silky texture. Mount Veeder once again proves its reputation for fresh terroir compared to the sometimes heavy over-ripeness of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Large sparkling finish on violet and chocolate, with impressive length.

    Great Californian Cabernet.

February 24, 2021 - This spicy and fulsome mountain wine still needs a few years to fully integrate, but my goodness it is lightning in a bottle. Garnet in color and full in body, the wine offers compelling aromas of boysenberry, camphor, peppercorn, and graphite. The flavors show incredible integration, with dried blueberry, sour cherry, and trail dust, along with rosemary and oregano (and really it seems like the whole rest of the spice rack, something that pairs incredibly well with the mature fruit). The finish is downright silky by Veeder standards, but it still carries a few prickly tannins and a round mouthfeel. 14.8% alcohol.

This is more subdued than a 2007 Veeder I had over the summer, which was fantastic but more wild and rambunctious. The 2005 has settled into an impressive groove, even if it hasn’t reached its peak yet. Drinking this now is kind of like watching a world-class miler starting the last lap in the lead: he’s come so far; he’s almost there; and it will be something special if he can finish the race. For what it's worth, I think this wine will get there. 96 at the moment, with even greater upside in 2023 or later.

March 7, 2020 - Occasional dinner group: Great whites and Cult Napa (@ Merlet): The bouquet was a bit locked this time with dark and red berries, ink and sweet spices. On the palate dark and red berries as well as chocolate. Beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness.

November 25, 2017 - For me it doesn't get much better than this. Perfect balance yet packed with fruit and lots of everything in an elegant way. This is mountain fruit Napa when it is at it best.
