September 9, 2022 - Quite cuddly. Warm oak, some fruit sweetness but not a much character.

None of the aged character of old Bordeaux.

Attractive old wine, low alcohol. There’s charm yes.

    Cork, 12.9%

July 20, 2022 - Spectacular bottle served at Bentleys restaurant in Sydney. Dried berries, pepper, bit of leather and wood, long finish, lightweight but supremely elegant. Wonder if it ever could have tasted better in its lifespan than this bottle did today.

June 26, 2022 - Presented much better than the previous bottle. Blackcurrant, violets and restrained oak. Softer tannins. Smooth and still very fresh, not at all expected for such an old vintage. Medium bodied. Excellent.

January 23, 2022 - Decanted 1.5 hours before tasting. Appearance: deep colour, good bricking but not overdeveloped. Appears younger than I expected.

Nose: medium intensity. Good complexity. Strong cedar note at first, With time, this was balanced by blackcurrant, smoke, some lavender, vegetal notes and a whiff of vanilla.

Palate: medium bodied. Tannins a little bit grippy. Not much fruit left on the palate. Lacked a bit of mouthweight and balance. Probably past its best drinking but still very good. Nose more impressive than the palate.

October 25, 2020 - When asked for a score what do you put for a wine from an unfortunate vintage , I remember ‘87 it was a miserable summer , perhaps it should be 90 ? I think this was the only one I had , there’s an ‘86 still there . I’ll admit I’m not a fan of straight Cabernets and I’m sure Wynns we’re wishing for some Merlot when they released this one . So the wine was still up in the neck 10mm and it had been upright for a couple of weeks , on decanting some lovely red roses wafted up , very little sediment , for a wine of 33years . From past experience I new that I would need to get into this quick smart before the fruit disappeared , I was still working through a glass of Chardonnay so poured a glass for the other member of the house , no response , sorry haven’t tried umm nice cherry smell ... ok , so my turn can’t quite see much fruit , a helluva lot of capsicum and eucalyptus and f’ing hell the tannins ...not only did they dry the mouth out it felt like they shrank my brain . Definitely enough of that for the night . Evening 2 , I’m cooking although I did sample a bit of the wine mid morning , not much change there , right 1800hrs wine o’clock back to it, where’s the fruit , it’s on the nose but still those mouth watering tannins , right , call me a philistine Ill add a dash of water , there’s the fruit , rhubarb cherries and capsicum ( vegetable ? ) I do this quite a bit if the wine doesnt come around , a bit of white a bit rose , try again the next night . So in the end what did I get , well a Cabernet that had quite a bit greenness and those tannins , just straight up and down Cabernet good length but just a bit mean , lively I grant you , who knows it maybe good for another 10 years , but I don’t think there’s the fruit to go the distance . It went reasonably well with dinner Barramundi with fennel spring onions rice and a fish sauce . Who would’ve thought . Although I’ve had sparkling wine and blue cheese , excellent.
