January 16, 2024 - Ready to drink & almost past its prime! Dried dark fruits along with subtle smokiness. Slightly earthy & light brick in color. In collection since 1982 w/proper storage conditions. Decanted 1 hr prior to serving.

October 18, 2023 - Shockingly good! Who would expect a 44-year-old CdP to be a treat to drink? I didn't. It was smooth as a baby's bottom, of course, but still full of Morvedre flavor. I think t's a further testament to the efficiency of the cellar... when we were drinking a lot of Bordeaux prior to 2000, I kept it at 58 degrees and 75% humidity. After 2000 we began drinking primarily US wines that don't age as well (and don't need as much) so turned it up to 61 so they would come along a bit faster. In any case, this was a great old bottle.

June 3, 2018 - Vinetasters: Beaucastel (1979-2006) (Skokie, IL): Served double-blind in a Beaucastel lineup. The nose on this feels a little muted, and there isn't too much expression, apart from a bit of dirty earth. There's a slight bit of an alcoholic burn on the nose as well, and when you dig for it, the fruit starts to show up, even if it is, at the end of the day, on the muted side. Air changes the story, and you start picking up a bit of coffee on the nose too. The palate shows lots of acidity, and the fruit isn't too sweet. This is also likely a cooler vintage, but overall, it's a little more dumb and mute than I'd like. (My 2nd, group's 2nd.)
