Community Tasting Notes 11

January 6, 2022 - A private dinner with friends (at home): Sixth bottle from an 18 bottle lot. Decanted four hours in advance. Youthful and energetic after two decades, bright cherry fruit and lots of spicy depth on the nose, fresh and fleshy palate, sweet and juicy, warm but not hot, citrus zest and cherries, schist minerality, lovely balance, papery tannins, very good resonance and length. Elegant and harmonious. Early maturity, at least two more decades in it.

December 15, 2018 - Consistent with my previous note, continues to develop slowly but surely, with some nutty and autumnal notes entering the aromatic spectrum on the otherwise slightly uncommunicative nose; firm and youthful palate, medium weight, fresh and with lots of spicy mineral energy, good but not exceptional flavour intensity; rather tight finish, but very good length. Slightly unyielding at present, in its adolescence, needs a few yours to reach adulthood.

August 30, 2017 - After two very convincing bottles in November and December 2015, this one is closer to my August 2015 tasting note. It is remarkably youthful for a 17 year old vintage port, in a fresh, mineral, elegant and cedary style, with violets and beautifully pure black cherries, medium-bodied, with bright tannins almost covering the delicate sweetness, very good length. A very good wine, but it does not show the spectacular development in the decanter of the two previous bottles, and I wonder how much added complexity age will bring. But we will see: fourteen bottles left.

June 10, 2016 - Prêt à boire. Ne plus attendre

December 6, 2015 - Identical to my previous note. What is really striking this time round, is how spectacularly the wine fills out over 24 hours and becomes rich and velvety, sweet and spicy, with plums and black cherries, dark chocolate and ripe tannins, whilst retaining a bright and lively structure. Drinking well already, but with the balance and energy to last for decades.
