October 27, 2023 - Northern Rhone Dinner (2012/2005/1998 focus) (Chez Lagragne): Excellent evolved N Rhone character, and perhaps a bit more elegant and classic than I might have imagined for this producer. Lovely wine at peak.

October 27, 2023 - (Mostly) 1998, 2005, 2012 Northern Rhône (Chicago, IL): Lithe and elegant, with a very olive-brine inflected nose here. High acidity with a smoky quality on the palate as well. Mature fruit, but not browning -- the acidity keeps this fresh. Probably best now -- it doesn't really have much more weight for further, extended aging.

March 26, 2022 - Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Meaty, peppery, and floral -- almost all the classic syrah elements, but none of the fruit. This comes off as quite austere and structural, and while it seems like the entire RPM crew of somms loved this a lot, I do wish it could have a little more fruit. But there's no mistaking how true to the grape this was. I was joking that if a MS candidate misidentified the grape in a blind tasting of this, we should take their pin away. Anyway, this is a very lovely bottle of syrah, and given the relative lack of fruit here, my suggestion would be to drink up.

March 13, 2019 - Super bottle. Love the full and layered nose of rich, classic Cote Rotie — meaty black fruit, pepper bacon, with a hint of florals. Rich and round on the palate with smoothing fine tannin and fresh acids. Great spot at age 21.

March 13, 2019 - Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): Initially this was a little dumb and mute, and I wasn't too thrilled with how it was showing. But air certainly helped improve this bottle -- it brought out a lot of the classic briny syrah perfumes, and a really intense meaty quality as well. The palate I didn't think quite lived up to the stunning nose -- it was surprisingly more light and acidic than I would have expected for this relatively riper vintage. The fruit I would say probably was on the black side of the spectrum, but wasn't of the sappy kind; this was more tart, if anything. To add to all of this is a moderate hint of earth. Give this just a spot of air to open up before consuming, but I won't be holding my bottles for much longer either.
